Help your older reader stop guessing at the words that keep tripping them up. With these heart words for grades 2–4, your 8 to 11 year old sees why thought, though and through are spelled the way they are, learns the one tricky part by heart, and watches their own scores climb on a graph. Ten calm minutes a day, a ready script, and no babyish pages. This is a printable heart words card set and practice book with 120 new words.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
• 2 PDF files: one for A4 and one for US Letter (8.5 x 11 in), 208 pages each, same content
• A 4-page PDF print guide: which file to print, how to print, terms explained, what the icons mean
• All three files come in one ZIP download
• 120 heart word cards, 6 per page, plus 6 blank cards for your own words
• 120 practice pages, one for every word
• 10 Spelling Checks and 10 Reading Checks, used as pre-test and post-test for each set of 12 words
• 10 One-Minute Reads plus 2 Review Reads, each with a bar graph the student colors
• 10 Group Trackers (up to 10 students), a 5-page Word Tracker for one student
• Mastery Log and Mastery Map (instead of a certificate)
• 2-page teacher and parent guide and a 2-page 10-minute small-group lesson script
• Word list in 10 sets of 12, and a 10-page answer key
THE CARDS
• Long words are split into syllables first, then into sound boxes: Wed · nes · day
• A red heart sits only under the tricky part, never under the whole word
• A dashed box shows a silent letter, like the k in knee or the d in Wednesday
• Each card shows its word family, for example thought: bought, brought, fought
EVERY PRACTICE PAGE
• Syllables & sounds: tap a dot for each sound and map the letters
• The tricky part, explained in plain words; 25 words also have a short word history (why island has an s)
• Word family to read and circle
• Read – Cover – Write – Check, three tries
• A dictation sentence on a fold-back strip, so the adult can read it aloud
• A line to write the student's own sentence
THE 120 WORDS
Grade 2–3 heart words in 10 sets grouped by tricky pattern, for example: though, thought, through, enough, early, learn, heard, country, ocean, island, answer, women, guess, eight, Wednesday, February, beautiful, different, favorite, minute. The full list is on pages 7–8 of the file. These words are different from our K–1 Heart Words set; only through and enough appear in both, here taught next to though and thought.
