Pre-Writing Strokes Worksheets for Ages 3-4
Category: Education / Preschool
64 printable pages that teach the nine strokes children need before letters, from wide 8 mm paths down to 3 mm. With easy mazes, dot to dot, stickers and a certificate. A4 and US Letter.
Letters come later. First, little hands learn the nine simple strokes that every letter is made of, one happy page at a time.
If your three-year-old cannot draw a straight line yet, starting with the alphabet is frustrating for both of you. This pack starts where children really start: a line down, a line across, a circle, a cross, a square, two slanted lines, an X and a triangle, in that order.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
• 1 ZIP file with 3 PDFs inside
• Pre-Writing-Strokes-A4.pdf, 64 pages, A4 (210 x 297 mm)
• Pre-Writing-Strokes-US-Letter.pdf, the same 64 pages, US Letter (8.5 x 11 in)
• PRINT-GUIDE.pdf, a 2-page guide: which file to print, how to print it, and what the symbols mean
• Each paper size has its own layout, so nothing is stretched or cut off
WHAT'S ON THE 64 PAGES
• 1 colourful cover
• 2 pages for grown-ups: the order children usually learn the strokes, and why not to begin with letters
• 45 stroke pages: 9 strokes x 5 levels each
• 8 very easy mazes with a wide path (mazes 5 to 8 add simple dead ends)
• 4 dot-to-dot pages with only 5, 6, 7 and 8 dots
• 1 progress chart and 2 pages of reward stickers (112 stickers)
• 1 "Ready for Letters!" certificate
THE 9 STROKES AND THEIR PICTURES
• Vertical lines: rain falls from the cloud to the flower
• Horizontal lines: the car drives to the house
• Circles: a smiling sun
• Crosses: the ribbon on a present
• Squares: the walls of a little house
• Diagonal lines to the right: the bee flies down to the flower
• Diagonal lines to the left: the bunny hops down to the carrot
• X shapes: X marks the spot on a treasure map
• Triangles: a camping tent
THICK TO THIN
• Level 1 has a very wide 8 mm tracing path that is easy to stay on
• The path narrows step by step: 8 mm, 6.5 mm, 5 mm, 4 mm, then 3 mm at level 5
• A green dot shows where to start and a small arrow shows which way to go
• Crosses and X shapes have dots numbered 1 and 2 to show which line comes first
PERFECT FOR
• Toddlers and preschoolers aged 3 to 4 who are not ready for letters yet
• Parents who want a calm, step-by-step start to writing
• Homeschool, preschool, pre-K and daycare
• Busy books and quiet-time folders (laminate the pages and use a dry-wipe marker)
HOW TO USE
• Follow the order of the pages, from vertical lines to triangles
• Let your child trace with a finger first, then a chunky crayon, then a pencil
• One or two pages a day, five to ten minutes, is plenty
• Add a sticker to the chart after each page and present the certificate at the end
HOW TO PRINT
• Print the PDF that matches your paper: A4 or US Letter
• Set the scale to "Actual size" or 100%, single-sided
• Normal 80 to 100 gsm (20 to 28 lb) paper works well; use card for the cover and certificate
• Print the sticker pages on full-sheet sticker paper, or on plain paper to cut and glue
• Colour looks best, and black and white also works
